Ministry of Health Inaugurates Governing Boards of Five Key Health Agencies

The Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has inaugurated the governing boards of five regulatory agencies, urging the new leadership to act with integrity, courage, and a clear commitment to advancing Ghana’s healthcare system.

Agencies Inaugurated

  • Health Facilities Regulatory Authority (HeFRA)
  • Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • National Vaccine Institute (NVI)
  • Centre for Plant Medicine Research (CPMR)
  • Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA)

Minister’s Charge to the Boards

At the swearing-in ceremony, Hon. Akandoh described the occasion as more than a routine appointment, noting that each institution “serves as a guardian of quality and protector of public trust” throughout the healthcare continuum from birth to end-of-life services.

Citing rising cases of cancers, strokes, and kidney diseases alongside a population with more complex needs, the Minister called for a shift from reactive to preventive care. He referenced government initiatives such as the forthcoming free primary healthcare program, the rollout of HPV vaccines, and the MahamaCare agenda as key steps toward a more resilient, prevention-focused system.

Specific Mandates

  • HeFRA: Ensure that every health facility large or small provides safe, ethical, and competent care.
  • NMC: Uphold training standards and foster continuous professional development for Ghana’s largest health workforce.
  • NVI: Advance local vaccine research, development, and manufacturing as Ghana moves from vaccine purchaser to producer.
  • CPMR: Strengthen research that blends traditional healing knowledge with modern science to develop safe, effective herbal therapeutics.
  • MoFFA: Promote dignity and order in mortuary and funeral services amid a growing commercial market.

Hon. Akandoh pledged the Ministry’s support while emphasizing accountability, reminding board members that their ultimate responsibility is to serve the ordinary Ghanaian with excellence.
