GHANA HEALTH SERVICE (GHS) RECEIVES 2,590 PIECES OF SAMSUNG TABLETS TO ROLLOUT eTRACKER

Published

on

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) received 2,590 tablets from SAMSUNG on February 1, at Accra to roll-out tablet based e-TRACKER in the country.

The e-TRACKER will help in effective collection of data to facilitate service provided in clients treatment, follow-up and effective monitoring of different health indicators and clients information.
The programme is a partnership between the Ghana Health Service, USAID, KOICA, SAMSUNG, Evaluate for Health and Good Neighbours.

Deputy Chief of Mission USAID/Chargé d’Affaires U.S. Embassy Accra, Ghana, Melinda Tabler-Stone confirmed the strong relationship between Ghana and the United States. “To achieve Nana Addo’s beyond AID agenda, we must strengthen our information”, she added.

In the speech by the Korean Ambassador, H.E Sungsoo Kim, he disclosed that Korea has supported CHPS concept with 9 million dollars. He indicated his excitement over the initiative by rhetorically asking “Why don’t Samsung and the partnership group extend this e-Tracker to Korea?”

The Director-General of GHS, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare revealed that his vision for the GHS is to use ICT to drive GHS in order to provide excellent Health Service and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
“The donation therefore of 2,590 tablets by Samsung to the GHS will contribute greatly to achieving one of my visions, which is to ensure that ICT is utilized at the Primary Care level. The donated tablets will be deployed in all functional CHPS Zones in the Upper East, Volta and Eastern Region”, he emphasized.

The Director-General added that another guiding principle is to apply ICT for evidence-based management decision making. The use of the e-tracker on the android device will facilitate the use of data for decision-making concerning health care services at the CHPS level. He also indicated that the e-tracker will promote transparency and accountability by ensuring accurate and verifiable aggregated data on services.

This tracker capture implemented by the GHS is a core component of DHIMS2’s suite of Android apps that provide an offline alternative to its traditional online web-based data capture and reporting tools. This app helps register and track a person. The offline system allows healthworkers to use the app in facilities or areas where there is poor or no network connectivity. This is made possible because the system allows the user to enter the data at area without network to capture and save the data collected, and sync it to the sever later.

GHANA PREPARES FREE NATIONWIDE HPV VACCINE CAMPAIGN TO FIGHT CERVICAL CANCER

Published

on

Ghana is poised to vaccinate millions of young girls against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) as part of a national cervical‑cancer prevention drive.  During a high‑level meeting in Kumasi on 31 July 2025, the Ghana Health Service (GHS), World Health Organization and Ghana Education Service announced that the HPV vaccine will be added to the routine immunisation programme and provided free to girls aged 9–14.  The upcoming campaign aims to inoculate around 2.2 million girls starting in September, making Ghana one of more than 140 countries to introduce the vaccine nationwide.

Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer‑related deaths among Ghanaian women, with over 2,800 new cases recorded annually. Low awareness, limited access to screening and high costs have hindered prevention efforts.  Ghana first piloted the HPV vaccine in 2013 in three regions; after 12 years, officials say the country is prepared to extend the programme nationwide.

WHO representative Dr Fiona Braka applauded Ghana’s decision, describing it as a crucial step toward eliminating cervical cancer. Dr Fred Adomako Boateng, Ashanti Regional Director of the GHS, noted that collaboration with schools will help reach eligible girls and ensure high coverage. Dr Williams Amankrah Appiah Kubi of the Ghana Education Service added that the GES will work to demystify the vaccine and encourage acceptance.  Public health officials emphasise that vaccinating girls before sexual debut is essential for maximum protection.

Published

on

The Ghana Health Service has indicated that Ghana is currently battling three outbreaks in the country (Covid-19, influenza, and Monkeypox). This was made known during a press briefing on Wednesday, 8th June.

Covid-19 Surge

According to the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Ghana has seen a rise in the number of Covid-19 cases in the last few weeks with active cases now at 400 with Omicron being the dominant variant. The rise in cases is attributed to events like school outbreaks and workplace-related events which most of the cases are largely from the Greater Accra region. Even though there has been a rise in the number of cases, there are no severe or critical cases.

Flu Incidence

Dr. Kuma-Aboagye speaking on the flu incidence said about 3460 samples were tested and 773 were confirmed as Influenza A(H3) positive. The first case was seen in January in the eastern region and surged in April. Currently, all the regions have reported cases except Upper East, Upper West, and North East regions. He advised the public to follow Covid-19 control measures for preventing influenza including hand hygiene, social distancing, use of face masks, and other preventive measures.

Monkeypox Outbreak

According to the Ghana Health Service, Ghana has confirmed 5 cases of monkeypox in three regions namely Eastern, Greater Accra, and Western. The cases were confirmed out of 12 suspected cases that were investigated from 24th May 2022. So far, no death has been recorded in the cases.
