President Mahama promises UHAS expansion to train more health workers

President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to expand the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in the Volta Region to address Ghana’s shortage of skilled healthcare personnel.  Speaking to the Volta Regional House of Chiefs on 31 July 2025, President Mahama said new campuses would boost the university’s intake, allowing Ghana to train more doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.  He noted that the expansion would also position Ghanaian graduates for overseas opportunities, with countries such as Barbados and the Bahamas expressing interest in recruiting Ghana‑trained nurses and doctors.

The president framed the project as part of a broader human‑capital strategy.  He explained that developing more campuses will help meet local demand for healthcare services while creating jobs and foreign‑exchange opportunities.  The President of the Volta Region House of Chiefs, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, welcomed the proposal and pledged support, emphasising that the initiative aligns with regional priorities and national development.  Mahama also said the government is committed to engaging chiefs in community health education, environmental care and civic responsibility.
